Background on Presenter:
Ruth Deike is an accomplished earth scientist and earth science educator.  In three decades of research with the US Geology Survey (USGS) she has become a world-recognized expert in geologic and chemical relationships between water and rocks in natural environments,.  Her Rock detective program is a Teachers’ Choice award winning program based on classroom tested Earth Science mysteries.

Detailed Description of Program:
Your GEMStones kit will contain approximately 25 specimens, each with mystery questions for students to solve and answer sheets for teachers.  By handling and examining the samples in the kits they begin to solve basic earth science concepts on their own and get the “Oh Wow!” of science.  This, combined with the interdependent theme, helps them understand the interconnectedness of Planet Earth.

This basic program can be followed by international videoconferences with schools doing similar things in other countries allowing students to share their interest in geology across cultures.
