Murutunguru, is a small village on Ukerewe Island in Lake Victoria in Tanzania. Mr. Bartolomeo Misana, a national of Tanzania and Director of GEM’s African development program spent three days there in mid August 2005 facilitating community discussions of their development priorities. At the end of the discussions they identified thirty six (36) development priorities.

Early 2008: One Book One Philadelphia selected Dave Egger's What is the What written about the conflicts in Sudan. Partnering with One Book, One Philadelphia, Drexel University Writing Program students wrote ten inteviews on local Sudanese immigrants that were published in Philadelphia City Paper. After meeting one of these Sudanese interviewees, Harriton High School student Josh Millan, with the support of his Gifted and Talented teacher, Dr. Terry O'Connor, founded the 'Lost Boys' of Sudan Reunion Project which raised $3,600 to reunite 'Lost Boy' Michael Kuch with his family living in Australia. Josh and Dr. O'Connor also organized an Oxfam Hunger Banquet to educate the community about the crisis in Sudan.

GEM was founded in 1981 as a 501(C)(3) non-profit organization to help schools meet the complex challenges of living in a global society. GEM currently operates as a public foundation. GEM is a Non-Governmental-Organization (NGO) in a close association with the United Nations Department of Public Information.
