UN Day 2006
Migration and Human Rights

Students from the tri-state area worked on migrant issues locally from a global perspective and developed their own Human Rights Declaration on Migration and Development. Students were given extensive background materials on selected sub themes such as Legal and Irregular Migrants, Voluntary and Involuntary Migrants, Discrimination, and Gender and Labor Issues as they began preparations for the December 1st United Nations Student Conference on Human Rights.

UN Day 2005

Water as a Human Right

On the morning of the 24th of October 2005, 309 students, ages 14-18, from 20 schools in the Philadelphia area, attended this year’s United Nations Day celebration.  The topic was Water: A Basic Human Right and related human rights to the important Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).  The Opening Plenary was held in the Convent Auditorium of Chestnut Hill College, with a welcome to the students from Cecilia Cavanaugh SSJ, PhD, Dean of the Undergraduate School, followed by opening remarks from Sara Kitchen, J.D.

Empowering Young People Towards the Millenium Summit Development Goals

More than 350 secondary school students from the Greater Philadelphia area met again at Chestnut Hill College, this time to learn more about Human Rights and the Millennium Summit Development Goals. The United Nations Day program has become a staple of fall schedules for schools in the Philadelphia area. Students began the day together for the moving key-note address by Dr. Abiodun Williams, Office of the UN Secretary-General, as he spoke on "The Implementation of the Millennium Summit Development Goals". Dr. Williams spoke on a variety of issues ranging from his role at the United Nations to his experiences in Sierra Leone, giving students a wonderful basis for their discussions throughout the day.

UN Day 2001

Empowering Young People to Fight Racism

 

Gathering in Sorgenti Arena at Chestnut Hill College on October 24, 2001, more than 350 students and teachers from 21 local schools prepared to participate in UN Day. The day began with Registration, followed by the Opening Plenary at 9:30 AM. Dr. Sara Kitchen, both a Professor at Chestnut Hill College and GEM’s representative at the United Nations, facilitated the events of the day. Dr. William Walker, Vice President for Academic Affairs at Chestnut Hill College gave the Welcoming Address. Shortly after, Wayne Jacoby, President of GEM spoke on “An Agenda for Change” and introduced the Keynote Speaker, Elsa Stamatopoulou, Deputy Director of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

UN Day 2004

Students Take Action on HIV/AIDS

Students from Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, and Delaware joined together at Chestnut Hill College for an exciting all day program on the Human Rights issues impacted by HIV/AIDS. Students worked together to draft a youth declaration on HIV/AIDS. Keynote address was made by UN Special Envoy Dr. Demetrios Argyriades.

UN Day 2000

On October 24th United Nations Day 2000 took place at Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia. It was co-sponsored by the college and Global Education Motivators (GEM) an NGO at the United Nations. In attendance were 271 secondary school students from the Greater Philadelphia area. The Opening Plenary was held in Martino Hall and was open to the public. Tonderai Chikuhwa, from the UN Office for Children and Armed Conflict gave the keynote address for Under-Secretary-General Olara Otunnu, who was delayed in Washington.
