YOUTH MOVEMENT FOR THE INTERNATIONAL YEAR FOR CULTURE OF PEACE MEETS AT THE UNITED NATIONS


On Friday December 8th more than 400 students from various parts of the world will meet at the UN to celebrate Human Rights Day. The program is organized by the United Nations Department of Public Information in association with GEM, UNA-USA, Connections 21, The Carol Baur Foundation, and LePages Educational Consultants.

On October 24th United Nations Day 2000 took place at Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia. It was co-sponsored by the college and Global Education Motivators (GEM) an NGO at the United Nations. In attendance were 271 secondary school students from the Greater Philadelphia area. The Opening Plenary was held in Martino Hall and was open to the public. Tonderai Chikuhwa, from the UN Office for Children and Armed Conflict gave the keynote address for Under-Secretary-General Olara Otunnu, who was delayed in Washington.

STUDENTS TAKE ACTION AGAINS HIV-AIDS


*A Student Led United Nations Distance Learning Experience Empowering Young People to Action on Human Rights Issues

 
Friday, December 3, 2004
9:30 AM to 4:30 PM
Grades 5-12

 

Premise: A live, international videoconference connecting HIV-AIDS issues to Human Rights where young people take action to support the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and visualize a future with a greatly reduced threat from HIV-AIDS.

Purpose: To provide a venue for international dialogue to fight HIV-AIDS. Students share with others what they are doing and develop a Youth Plan of Action to Fight HIV-AIDS.

Prepare by: From Words to Deeds videoconference before November 19th. Receive: specially prepared background student workbook, teacher guide and educational resources. Students will: visualize their future as they experience international dialogue, collaborative decision making, receive international recognition, and partake in a live videoconference and/or webcast, and tell the world (1) what they are doing to fight HIV-AIDS as well as (2) debate and approve an International Youth Action Plan to fight HIV-AIDS.

Students select from sub topics such as Education and AIDS, Women and AIDS, Poverty and AIDS, Orphans and AIDS, AIDS and the Media, and more.

Cost: Free with Words to Deeds or UN Day at CHC program

Students Take Action on HIV/AIDS

 

Where: Chestnut Hill College

When: Thursday, October 21, 2004

Time: 9:30 a.m. to 2:15 a.m.

Focus Groups: Grades 8-12
 
Background: Secondary school students from the Greater Philadelphia area this year will meet at Chestnut Hill College to learn and discuss how students can Take Action on HIV/AIDS. They will be encouraged to join with their peers from around the world to help each other develop a student declaration on the topic of HIV/AIDS. Moving from "words to deeds", students will work from pre-selected focus areas prior to and during the program to develop action plans with a local, state, national, or global perspective.
 

Topic: Student will work from the topics below during the breakout sessions:

1. AIDS Discrimination
2. Educational Impact of HIV/AIDS
3. Women and AIDS
4. Orphans and AIDS
5. Socio-Economic Impact of AIDS
6. AIDS and the Media
7. Civil Society and HIV/AIDS
8. Treatment and Patient Rights
9. Globalization and AIDS
10. Democracy and AIDS

Also: Included for selected students from each school, at no additional cost, is participation in the United Nations Student Conference on Human Rights. This conference will take place on Friday, December 3, 2003 via an all day, live, interactive, international videoconference linked with students around the world involved in similar pursuits. Students will present their work to the UN and each other and will also develop their own Youth Plan of Action for a Better World that will be presented officially to the United Nations at the end of the day.

Welcome to the Academy's newest program - the Town Square Initiative. The Town Square is an exciting new series of discussions, workshops and public forums designed to bring together scientific and policy experts to consider critical environmental issues. The goal is to promote dialogue and thoughtful exchanges on important public issues that relate to sustainability and the environment.

Town Square is an opportunity for the public to hear--and be heard by--some of the most influential scientific experts and key decision makers.Although the programming will usually be held in the Academy's state-of-the-art auditorium here in Philadelphia, they will be webcast to sites around the world. Interdependence Day has been launched as an annual event to reflect on the realities of our interdependent world. This commemoration takes place the “day after” 9/11 as a symbol of a commitment to an awareness and responsibility to a future of democracy in a global setting.
