GEM FOCUSES ON EDUCATION FOR ALL

United Nations Day 2003
Seventh Annual Conference for Grades 8-12
This year's celebration of United Nations Day gave more than 350 students the opportunity to participate at two different venues. UN Day was celebrated at Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia, PA, as well as at the Scottish Rites Auditorium in Collingswood, New Jersey.

The programs engaged students from the tri-state area in the UNESCO initiative of Education for All. Students began both days with an inspiring key-note address by Dr. Sheila Wamahiu, Education Programme Officer for UNICEF on "The Importance of Education for All". Dr. Wamahiu talked about her experiences promoting education in Africa, and excited the students for the day ahead.

United Nations Day is an opportunity for students to explore global issues, and then move from education into action on these issues.

Students were encouraged to join with their peers from around the Philadelphia area to help achieve education for all. Students worked from these nine topics; Literacy, Universal Primary Education, Poverty and Hunger, Human Rights Education, HIV/AIDS, Discrimination in Education, Adult Education, Gender Disparity, and the Role of the Media; both prior to and during the program in order to develop youth declarations with a local, state, national or global perspective.

Students had the opportunity to work with a broad range of facilitators, including; Dr. Marie Conn, Chestnut Hill College; Rick Grier-Reynolds, Wilmington Friends School; Sheri Hope Culver, WYBE public television, Dr. Sara Kitchen, Chestnut Hill College; and Isabella Stich, BARTHCO, Inc.

United Nations Day is a program which excites, energizes, enriches, and empowers all students involved. United Nations Day has become a staple of fall schedules for schools in the Philadelphia area. If you are interested in next year's program, Friday, October 22, 2004, please contact GEM at [email protected] or 215.248.1150.
