GREATER PHILADELPHIA AREA YOUTH DECLARATION-UNITED NATIONS DAY 2002 - Declaration on the Rights of the Child-All people, including children, deserve basic human rights. Throughout history children have been the last, and remain last, to be guaranteed basic rights. We, as children find that the Declaration will have a direct and positive effect on our lives and believe that the United States should review and ratify the Convention on the Rights of the Child. This document was adopted by the United Nations on November 20, 1989 and it is time for the US to join the world in ratification.
- Sustainable Development-The ways in which we may achieve a sustainable environment include: decreasing atmospheric pollution through energy and fuel efficiency; educating consumers so that they will make sacrifices for the environment's sake; support moderate environmental lobby groups; back legislation to fine environmental offenders; share ideas with others; educate people on how pollution effects the earth and everyone's future; encourage everyone to believe they can make a difference. We believe that individuals acting in their communities can be active in promoting political, economic, and environmental sustainability.
- Poverty-One of the most tragic and life threatening issues in the world is poverty. Poverty is when people or a person cannot even afford necessary things. Many people think poverty is when people have no food or shelter, but poverty can be much worse. No matter how much we read or hear we will never comprehend the horrors people in poverty suffer. Poverty is a form of life, which kills countless people each year, either from lack of food, clothing, or shelter; people living in poverty are helpless. We the children and future leaders of the world...pledge to educate and assist developed nations about the scourge of poverty that has befallen 1.2 billion people worldwide so they can effectively help those affected by poverty learn skills to help themselves. We can donate money, food, clothes, or even sponsor a child or family in poverty. We must conquer poverty so the world can be an equal place. Every thing we do to help other people will take a step forward and help prevent poverty everyday around the world.
- Discrimination-Before we can conquer discrimination, we must understand the reason for it's existence. We believe that a bias exists as a result of ignorance, a lack of caring, societal influences, and fear. To combat these factors, we propose to educate parents on the harm of passing racism onto their children, teach children to be open to other types of people, and encourage political leaders and the media to take a stand against discriminatory ideas.
- Education-To quote the old saying "give a man a fish, he eats for a day; teach a man to fish, and he eats for a lifetime". We endeavor to educate people to read, farming techiques, proper child care, their rights as individuals, and proper sanitary practices. All of this should be done while being mindful of different cultures and customs, and realizing that peace and prosperity cannot be achieved through intimidation. We also propose the UN sponsor an educational summit for educators and professionals around the world. Quality education is the silver bullet for so many of society's problems. How children are educated today will determine our future.
- International Criminal Court(ICC)-In these complex days of globalization and consolidation, it becomes ever more important for the United States and the United Nations to support an international justice system to help protect against the atrocities committed worldwide. As a forum for seeking justice, the ICC represents the pinnacle of a cooperative judiciary. U.S./U.N. support for such an august body is essential. We have come to the conclusion that because humans are flawed by nature, any system presented would have its flaws, but we could also do our best to achieve justice for everyone.
- Health Issues-The HIV/AIDS pandemic has taken the lives of 24 million people. Malaria kills up to 2 million people a year, 90% of these people in Africa. Complications of maternal health are responsible for the deaths of 585,000 women, 1.5 million infants, and 1.4 million unborn. We believe that education and awareness can prevent the spread of diseases. Although political leaders need to promote ideas about health, we the small people can work to help them, because in the end, we all fit as a piece of the puzzle and are therefore affected in some way. We pledge to raise money, donate food, donate clothing, volunteer, maintain involvement, and spread the word about the lack of medical health worldwide.
- Gender Equality-Gender Equality is something that needs to be stressed all over the world. In many nations across the globe women suffer physical discrimination in many ways. Also women even here in the United States aren't viewed as equals in the work force, home or minds of man. Equality is something that needs to be started in the mind, before action can be taken to make the world a better place in the future. Women should have equal opportunities/rights as men; they should not be seen as objects or property.
- Exploitation of Children-Every child should be free to grow up in a safe environment, free from unjust labor, sexual abuse, and military service. Children are the future, and all of the problems affecting our world, from poverty to lack of education, bear down on the children of today. Due to the interconnectedness of all of these topics, we have decided that the first step towards the extermination of this exploitation is education. We intend to educate students, teachers, and the public at large and to notify the American government of our knowledge pertaining to this issue. By doing so we hope to convince the government to make advances in this area as well as the others, for the sake of our youth.
- Child Mortality-The causes of child mortality include; inadequate access to food and water, inadequate sex and gender education, and lack of healthcare facilities and supplies. Indirectly child mortality can be attributed to large societal problems including; economic sanctions, corrupt governments, lack of accountability, and religious or cultural strife. To solve this problem, we believe three main factors need to be overcome. Education is key to helping people realize they have options, such as birth control. We need to build adequate healthcare facilities, making proper care available, affordable and accessible to everyone. The third factor is availability of clean water, for drinking and sanitation.
