Instructor: Sara Ellen Kitchen, J.D.

Sara Ellen Kitchen, J.D., is a tenured Associate Professor and Chair of the Sociology Department at Chestnut Hill College. As an attorney-educator, she has developed and taught courses on children's rights, juvenile justice, child welfare, and peace & justice issues. As Chair of the Department of Sociology for fifteen years, she has organized and implemented minors in Social Gerontology, Social Justice and Social Change, and Human Services in the College for Women and majors in Criminal Justice and Social Gerontology in the ACCELERATED Division. Trained in mediation and alternative dispute resolution through continuing legal education, she is developing graduate studies in conflict resolution for Chestnut Hill College.

Her professional research and advocacy interest include the area of children's rights and she is a recognized speaker on the subject. One particular area of expertise is teaching The Convention on the Rights of the Child. A former Watson Fellow, she also served as the first woman assistant public defender in juvenile court in Bucks County, PA.

She is currently GEM's permanent non-governmental organization (NGO) representative to the United Nations.
