YOUTH MOVEMENT FOR THE INTERNATIONAL YEAR FOR CULTURE OF PEACE MEETS AT THE UNITED NATIONS


On Friday December 8th more than 400 students from various parts of the world will meet at the UN to celebrate Human Rights Day. The program is organized by the United Nations Department of Public Information in association with GEM, UNA-USA, Connections 21, The Carol Baur Foundation, and LePages Educational Consultants.

Students from GEM’s UN Day 2000 program and various Words to Deeds interactive video conferences will join with the other young people from grades 5 through 12 to discuss their planned and implemented human rights action plans for A Culture of Peace. The students will also be drafting a Youth Declaration on Human Rights that will be presented to the President of the General Assembly at the end of the day.

The program will be webcast throughout the world and can be seen live or on tape via the UN website: www.un.org. A part of the day called “A Conversation with Olara Otunnu” where students will interact with Mr. Otunnu, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict, on the state of the world via their focus areas of : (1) education (2) child labor (3) landmines and (4) rights and responsibilities will be cablecast via World Link TV.
