Theme: Empowering Young People to Fight Racism

Main Objective:

To motivate young people to action to fight racism, racial discrimination, Xenophobia and related intolerance.

Invited Speaker: Elissavet Stamatopoulou, Deputy Director United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights

Background: Secondary school students from the Greater Philadelphia area will gather at Chestnut Hill College to learn more about the International Year of Mobilization Against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia, and Related Intolerance and then will be encouraged to move from "Words to Deeds". Students will work from their pre-selected focus areas prior to and during the program to develop action plans with a local, state, national or global perspective. More than 300 young people are expected to attend.

After UN Day 2001, when each school has (1) studied at least one of the focus topics (2) undertaken a related student action plan and (3) submitted a short 100 word report to GEM regarding their project(s), each school can select two students and one teacher to participate in a free trip to the United Nations on Friday, December 7th to meet with students from around the world engaged in similar activities to learn, discover, network and declare to the world their joint opinions on what has to be done in this area to help make a better world for everyone.

Cost: $10 per student (teacher free)
