UN Student Conference on Human Rights 12/5/03

Education for All

Plan of Action

PREAMBLE

We, the representatives of youth and youth serving organizations have met on December 5, 2003 at United Nations Headquarters in New York City at the sixth Annual Student Conference on Human Rights.

We have gathered here to promote "Education for All", convinced that every person should have access to education and

Acknowledge that education is a right documented in Article 26 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Realizing that money must be accounted for and used specifically for indicated education and,

Recognizing that education is key to the future for generations to come,

Consideration should be given for education not only on the academic level, but also on a personal level, thus teaching life skills.

In the spirit of human rights, we realize that learning is everywhere, not limited to age, gender, level of intelligence or life experiences.

We now call upon youth, governments of the world and the international community to work together with us to carry out these commitments and make our vision of education for all a reality.

    EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION AND CARE

    It should be recognized that:

  1. Early childhood education is reliant on family, meaning the education of young people stems from education of parents.

  2. Education should be equal with regard to gender and sexual identity.

  3. Anti-violence and anti-oppressive education should be taught through actions and example.

UNIVERSAL PRIMARY EDUCATION AND EDUCATION QUALITY

    It should be recognized that:

  4. Facilities, location, affordable(free) spaces for classes including adequate supplies, sanitation and space are needed for classes.

  5. Community support ensuring safety of students, funding for schools and political backing. Is required.

  6. Teachers should be qualified in the area of teaching.

    ADULT LITERARY

    It should be recognized that:

  7. Accessible and flexible education should be provided to adults.

  8. Governments should teach adults basic level of adult literacy to allow them to function in society.

  9. Education should be free or subsidized.

    YOUTH EDUCATION

    It should be recognized that:

  10. Quality education is needed in the areas of: life skills, cultural sensitivity, same sex education. Safe and secure learning environment. Catering to different learning styles, diversity: sex, gender, class culture abilities. Eliminate bias and propaganda in system and learning materials.

  11. The supervision of funds for education by the various organizations should be enforced..

  12. Education should be taught in the native language to ensure an optimal learning experience.

    GENDER EQUALITY

    It should be recognized that:

  13. The standards of education for women should be raised by making all forms of education available to both genders.

  14. Children should be taught to recognize and practice gender equality.

  15. Through the use of media, both foreign and domestic make the public aware of the gender inequality problems associated with education.

This Plan of Action was approved by all participants unanimously and was presented to H.E. Dirk Jan van den Berg, Acting President of the UN General Assembly.
