Teachers, Administrators, Future Teachers, NGOs-- join us for a series of workshops and other related experiences on an important component of 21st Century Education: Teaching Peace and Human Rights in a Multicultural World

  • Interact with human rights education specialists to gain a better understanding of teaching human rights in the 21st Century.
  • Meet Ramu Damodaran, Deputy Director for Partnerships and Public Engagement in the UN Department of Public Information’s Outreach Division and Chief of the UN Academic Impact initiative
  • Converse with Teacher Sam, (Rayla Melchor Santos), founder and President of McKinley Hill International School and Leadership Academy for Children, Lipa, Philippines. She is also President of I am S.A.M. Foundation and founder of Cyber Kids Best (CKB168).
  • Discuss human rights resources with Ellen Firestone, Youth for Human Rights.
  • Play human rights games with Medard Gabel, BigPictureSmallWorld.
  • Interact with students and teachers from the Philadelphia HS for Peace & Social Justice.
  • Learn more about distance learning for human rights in the classroom and much more…
  • Then participate in Day 2 at the United Nations where you spend the day having a videoconference dialogue with other educators from various parts of the world on Teaching Peace and Human Rights in a Multicultural World.

About the Keynote Speaker:
Ramu Damodaran is Deputy Director for Partnerships and Public Engagement in the United Nations Department of Public Information’s Outreach Division and is chief of the United Nations Academic Impact initiative, which aligns institutions of higher learning and research with the objectives of the United Nations and the States and peoples who constitute it. He is also the current secretary of the United Nations Committee on Information. His earlier posts with the Organization have included the Departments of Peacekeeping and Special Political Questions, as well as the Executive Office of the Secretary-General.

Ramu Damodaran has been a member of the Indian Foreign Service, where he was promoted to the rank of Ambassador, and where he served as Executive Assistant to the Prime Minister of India as well as in the diplomatic missions in Moscow and to the United Nations, and in a range of national governmental ministries. He has been actively involved in mass media in India, including print, radio and television, and was a recipient of the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union award for the best radio documentary.

Conference Details and Fees for Chestnut Hill Participants: 

Day 1 $35: Includes a selection of 9 workshops and lunch

Day 2 $35: Includes all day international videoconference program at the United Nations. Transportation to NY for the UN Teachers Conference on Human Rights will be available.  Maximum number of teachers for transportation to NY is 50. Lunch is not included. Bring ~$10 for lunch in UN staff dining room.

Participants are encouraged to attend both days of this conference, but may select to participate in only one of the two days.
