About the Program:
As of March 2017, 5 million people have fled Syria, with another 6 million+ people internally displaced within Syria. This program will look at the life of one refugee, Youssef Abbara. He will tell his personal, first hand experiences of living in Syria during wartime, and the challenges of building a new life in different countries as a displaced person. He will share what his life was like in Syria prior to the war, and offer a stark comparison of how his life has changed.  He will also speak about his experience working with Syrian refugee children working on the streets of Lebanon after fleeing their home country.

Youssef has lived the experience of being a refugee and someone who has lived in a war-torn country.  He has spoken on this topic many times with the United Nations Association of Greater Philadelphia as well as other organizations, schools, universities, and libraries. Additionally, he has developed a "collective experience" on Syrian refugees after working with many other Syrian refugees at the Nationality Services Center in Philadelphia.

Participants will:

  • Gain an understanding of the issues that led to the war in Syria
  • Learn about the Syrian War from someone who lived it
  • Interact with a Syrian refugee living in the United States
